Stupid Chinese medicine: In 2012, rhino horn was selling in Vietnam for $1,400 an ounce--the price of gold.
Some false beliefs are hard to eradicate. It takes in depth education and major cultural revisioning--and sometimes harsh legal remedies.
Getting some superstitious east Asians to reject rhino horn or tiger testicles as a medicinal or magical product is about as easy as getting American Bible Belt evangelists and Iranian Muslim fundamentalists to reject a crude creationist version of how humans and animal species appeared on earth. Adam and Eve had no navels and rhino horn cures cancer are equally dangerous notions. People and animals get killed due to stupid brain freeze over idiotic traditional beliefs.
As bright as Aristotle was, no sane philospher today will agree with him that the brain acts as a cooling organ for the blood and that the heart is the seat of thought and feeling.
We no longer view the brain as a refrigerator. We remove hearts and replace them with no loss of soul, personality, or consciousness to the patient. But tamper with the brain with psychoactive drugs, alcohol, tumors, lobotomy, electric shock, or injury and see what happens.
As the article linked above suggests, Vietnamese dolts that believe in rhino horn remedies could just as easily chew their finger nails to get the same substance. Finger nails are cheaper and they remain a renewable resource. No need to fly to Africa to find them. You can even grow them at home!
