Interventions to remedy undue influence are potent but awkward events for everyone involved. No one tends to enjoy telling someone they care about to change his ways or his mind or that his cherished beliefs are bogus. Less enjoyable is convincing the person under influence to sit through several days of educational and at times confrontational dialog. Cult exit counseling in a voluntary process often takes several days of up to 10 to 16 hours a day of open dialog and information sharing to succeed. The long hours are due to the depth and challenge of the topic for all involved and not because anyone wants to work that long on any given day.
Below is an example of a successful intervention with a man in Trinidad who was deeply committed to Ramtha School of Enlightenment just three days prior to this interview posted on youtube. "Douglas" was about to leave his business, his two children and wife in 1990 to move to Yelm, WA because he feared catastrophic events predicted by Ramtha, an imaginary entity channeled by J Z Knight. He had been to one cult retreat in person prior to the intervention, but the experience had powerful transformative effects on his life and thought process.
His family introduced my colleague and me to him by surprise at his family home. Had he known we were coming, he admitted he would have consulted with cult leaders who would have urged him to not meet with us. Through the encouragement of his therapist, he agreed to talk with us. He agreed to the interview below (shown in part) on the 4rth day of intervention after he was completely free of Ramtha.
Today in 2012, he's happily engaged in business in Trinidad and well-connected to his family.
(The following post to YouTube was blocked due to complaints by Ramtha cult operatives who claim that this man's personal testimony violates the "non-disclosure" of teachings contract he signed before he took the abusive workshops in Yelm)
